Developmental Editing

Big-Picture Editing

Developmental editing focuses on your story as a whole.

I will read over your manuscript not only as an editor but also a reader. I will be assessing how all the elements of your story work together, especially your characters, plot, pacing, and other story-level issues. I will give you feedback on what is working and what areas could use some additional work.

Potential Issues and Solutions

I will point out potential issues, explaining why and how they affect the reader's experience, and I will provide suggestions of potential solutions.

My goal isn't to tell you what you must do, but rather to provide you with recommendations and the information you need to elevate your story to the next level.

Developmental Editing Comes First

This is the stage where story-level issues are addressed.

Because this can lead to significant revisions to the manuscript, this phase of the editing process should be completed before any other editing is done.

What to Expect

  • We will discuss your goals and what areas you're most interested in receiving feedback

  • You send me your manuscript as a Word document

  • After reading through your manuscript, I will send the document back with comments that point out the passages and ideas that are working and those that could use more work

  • You will also receive an extensive letter that provides feedback on the main areas to focus on during your revisions
